The Korean American Community Foundation (KACF) and the Korean American Community Foundation of San Francisco (KACF-SF) have announced plans to merge into a single national organization, a move aimed at enhancing philanthropic support for Korean American communities across the United States. The merger, which is set to be finalized this summer, marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Korean American philanthropy, although the deal value remains undisclosed.
The consolidation of KACF and KACF-SF builds on over a decade of collaboration and shared objectives between the two foundations. With this merger, the unified organization aims to leverage combined resources, expertise, and networks to bolster its capacity to support nonprofits, mobilize funding, and amplify its impact on a national scale. Kyung B. Yoon, President & CEO of KACF, emphasized that the merger reflects a shared vision for the future of Korean American philanthropy, rooted in strong local engagement and a connected national approach.
The timing of this merger is particularly critical as both the Korean American and broader Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities navigate ongoing challenges and emerging opportunities. Despite a growing population and increasing needs within these communities, AAPI-serving organizations receive a disproportionately low share of private philanthropic funding, accounting for less than 0.34%. At the same time, a generational shift in wealth and leadership presents new avenues for engagement and giving. The newly formed organization intends to harness these dynamics to enhance investment in community initiatives.
Importantly, the merger will not disrupt existing programs or regional activities. All current initiatives, including annual galas in San Francisco and New York City, will proceed uninterrupted. The merger is expected to facilitate expanded programming, increased grantmaking, and outreach into new regions such as Los Angeles. The continuity of leadership is assured, as all current staff and board members from both foundations will join the merged entity, ensuring ongoing community engagement and support.
This merger signifies a broader trend in the philanthropic landscape, where organizations are increasingly recognizing the value of collaboration to maximize impact. By combining forces, KACF and KACF-SF aim to create a more robust framework for addressing the needs of Korean American communities across the country. As the philanthropic sector continues to evolve, this merger may serve as a model for other community-focused organizations seeking to enhance their reach and effectiveness in a rapidly changing environment.
